Andy Warhol as drawn by J. Wyeth. Part of the extremely impressive new exhibition Eye Contact: Modern American Portrait Drawings from the National Portrait Gallery just released by the Smithsonian. Some very unusual portraits and loads and loads of great, original information on both the artists and the sitters. Wow. We were especially taken by this portrait of Beauford Delaney by Georgia O'Keefe (we didn't even know O'Keefe did portraits) and this portrait of Edna St. Vincenet Milay by William Zorach.
December 17 will mark the 100th anniversary of the first flight by the Wright Brothers at Kitty Hawk, South Carolina. To celebrate the Library of Congress has finally made avaliable online the fantastic Wilbur and Orville Wright Papers. Included in the collection are correspondence, diaries, notebooks, scrapbooks, drawings and all kinds of documents relating to the attempts of the Wrights to fly. Most interestingly though is the inclusion of the Wrights' collection of glass-plate photographic negatives including the famous shot (shown above) of the "First Flight" at Kitty Hawk on December 17, 1903.
If you don't have time to browse the material yourself make sure to at least visit the excellently chosen and written Collection Highlights and also a special section on Photography and the Wright Brothers.
